I heard this suggested somewhere, How about instead of a contest you just start at the top of the member list and showcase a member each week in date order in which they signed up.

I'll jump on the delayed bandwagon. Maybe let things settle down after the giant migration from the crap site. The idea of featuring everyone one at a time each week is a good one also. Might be tough trying to contact each individual member for photos and a Bio though. Right now I say Jan 08 would be a good time to start though.

I agree, COTM could start in new year, as far as the other, sort of like the 300M - you could do a Featured car of the week, basically picked at random, with no duplication, from anyone that has a picture available - no pic, no feature.
Perhaps a separate "photo file" for those pics, and once it has been shown, then the pic is flagged or something.

Featured car or something similar.

Voting is kind of pointless as it only becomes a "popularity contest".

Exactly.

I agree with the idea of a featured car of the month....

I really dont care about the voting part though.. enough competition in life:willy_nilly:
I'd rather be in a forum where people say "nice car" , than "that car is better than the other"

Not to be the pessimist here, but,

there are way more 2nd gens on here than us first gens, which means, us first gens have a shitty chance of ever being picked.

I know that as a First Gen Owner, I am biased a bit towards first gen. And 2nd Genners are the same way. I mean, I can only recall Phils trep being the only first gen to win. Which yeah, it was a great car.

But Like I said, I personally think that it is somewhat rigged, which no one can control it. Just alot more 2nd gen LH cars on any site than First Gen which leave us less chance of being noticed. I mean, haven't you ever noticed how much more posts are in the 2nd gen forum as opposed the First gens?

Just Food For Thought.

I think you missed my point just a bit. There are more 2nd gen OWNERS. That doesn't mean they are all biased to 2nd gens though. As an example, I voted for Phil's 1st gen, when he was running against me. If someone is an exemplary person, or has an outstanding car, or the combination, I have no problem nominating and voting for them. The people I nominated as a package, not because of their car only. You could have the greatest car ever, but if you're an asshole I won't vote for you. Maybe not everyone feels like that, but I sure do.

I don't think we even need LHOM.

Look at how many people showed interest in COTM at DI.net when it first started. Then look at how much the interest died down, even before the whole Greg fiasco. What separates this place from the other is the people, not the cars. I don't think we need some award to show just how good our cars are, everyone's car is unique and special in their own way! Even if your car is bone stock, as long as it's being taken care of, what really makes it that much different from someone else's? At the end of the day all that matters is that our rides get us from point A to point B, comfortably, reliably, and most important of all, safely.

I think a staff or paid member appointed "Feature Ride" every week or so might do the trick. Personally, I was losing interest in the IOM and COTM contests because some of the more impressive cars were being missed out on because the owner didn't post as frequently or they had won the award in the distant past.

Sneke_Eyez
11-25-2007, 11:50 AM
See, I think it'd be nice to have an LHOM.
Theres many members here who have nice cars that have changed since they won COTM or IOM.
Theres also many members here who just plain have sweet cars.
I do think updated sig threads is a part of it. People are always SO worried about keeping their mods a big secret for Carlisle or other meets.
But why?
Its not like there are extra points awarded at Carlisle to those people who have mods we didn't know about before.
Personally, Carlisle is such a fun, busy, exciting blur for me that I rarely get time to look at a member's car in depth. Therefore, I bet I've missed out on looking at some truly sweet mods.
Now, if there were pictures of those mods online, then I could look and oooh and ahhhh.

The point of this community is for us to share ideas.
Not keep stuff to ourselves all the time.

I really don't think LHOM has to be a popularity contest. When people vote for LHOM, they should be voting for the car/member they like the most. The member himself/herself counts too.
The nomination process should be held to one nom for each member. Therefore, a person has to really decide who they feel is most deserving of the honor.
Also, if each member only gets 1 vote, then many members have to vote for the same person to actually get that person nominated.

And if that means that someone with a mostly stock car gets nominated, so what?
I won IOM with a very lightly modded car, but I won because I was a well-liked, quality member. Theres nothing wrong with that, in my humble opinion.

Also, as to the participation thing, I think people here are a lot more motivated about this site. Now that we know what things are like when they really suck, we are all happy as hell to be here and have the company of the same people we used to enjoy talking to. The idea that we care even more about this site now than we cared about Di.net (which, I cared a LOT about), should lead to increased participation.

Thats just my .02...

See, I never saw it as a competition, but rather a spotlight on a member that was selected by the members, which I think is the best way. You can't get it twice, so everyone will have their turn eventually. How is the order being selected by the members different than doing it randomly? Would you guys like to have maybe 2 winners per month with one being featured the first 2 weeks and the other the next 2? That way we can hit twice as many people each year.

At DI.net, a couple of months went buy where people won because they were big post/rep whores and had a lot of voting buddies. I swear I remember a more or less stock 2.7 with hubcaps being featured on the front page and that was the last time I cared about the contest.

Kind of think weekly writeup/photos of a member or two or three (no voting) just the member and car would be cool. Keep a separate area for member spotlight.

Random or by join date-voting does get into popularity contests and damn some months every member/car were deserving but you could only vote for 1 (as far as I know LOL).

intrepidhero

I say have a monthly contest for the best looking trep. But only open it to the members who want to compete, and they would send pics in that they want nominated. then let the paid members vote on which one of the contestants for the win.

I also like the randome selection of the members as a spotlight. this can be done on a weekly or biweekly basis, and would focus on the person as well as their car. I figure with over 120 members you would take over two years if you do it weekly to go through all the members. and that is if no one else joins (that doesnt seem likely) So you would have a different spotlight for some time to come.

who?
I just went back through the IOMs and the COTMs, and aside from the stock pic of kcarlos's 2002 SE that he included in his sig page, I can't see a 2.7 with hubcaps.
Keiths car wasn't stock at the point he won either...

also, as for the person with a 2x4 holding up their hood, who are you talking about?
whitey?
he had a first gen and I know that was common, but there isn't an engine pic of his car in his IOM thread.
He had a fair amount of stuff done to that car...

I'm just asking, because though I think there was the occasional person who didn't necessarily deserve to be nominated, the person who won had a great car and was a great member.

I would think everybody here is mature enough to handle a LHOTM voting. Kept to paying members to help the integrity of the vote, it could do well.

If somebody has interest in winning then they should have thier car pics up and a mod list in a sig thread. Its like the lottory- cant win if you dont play!

If everyone remembers its just for fun we could all have a blast.

I just didn't have enough time to get everything set up for this month. Hopefully we can start in February.

You know, the large carnivorous bird. One species in particular is the national bird. What else could an eagle be? :p
