So I have these two JL Audio 12" subwoofers in an enclosure, in my trunk, not connected to anything.
http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/9054/dsc02877my1.th.jpg (http://img112.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc02877my1.jpg)
and I need 4 of these air flow thingies for my box, any idea on where I can find these?
http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/4949/dsc02879ji4.th.jpg (http://img157.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc02879ji4.jpg)
Is this Dual 600W amp good enough for this? I'm really cheap and it's on sale for $99.99...

The air flow thingies look to be what we call ports. You could get them online or at your local custom stereo shop.
I'll let those with more current experience speak to the amp.

Air flow thingies?
I do believe you mean ports as mentioned above. They should be built into the box. If it's a sealed box, it won't have the correct volume for a ported box and vice versa. A port is simply an opening in the box that is sized exactly for a certain frequency response. Ported boxes are good for SPL, but not so much for SQ as they sacrifice performance in certain areas for better performance in a narrow band, usually around 39-ish hz. They can sound very good, but you need a very experienced builder to make it work.
You can't just drill a hole and slap them in, it's more involved than that. The box has to be built for the ports. The ports have to be a certain size and depth, even the shape and placement in the box come into play.
Need more info on the amp (ie: rms wattage, thd%, etc) but at 99 bucks, I can't see it being very good.
You get what you pay for.............

Knowing him, I doubt he'll even have them in a month. They're not hooked up, so I can't "listen to them" as it is... though to test them I plugged them in and they sounded like sh*t without the ports, and when we stuck ports from a floor model in (that he wouldn't give me), they sounded damn good.

That box is waaaaaayyyyy undersized for those subs............especially ported.
Not to mention that's the oddest design box I've ever seen............
Sealed on the back (with plexi as well, not good) of the subs, and ported on the front.........odd..........
Looks like it's more for "bling" than performance.
To each his own.............

Great White
07-21-2008, 10:45 PM
I'll try this one more time:
The box is built to match the sub manufacturers requirements.
The ports are sized to the box and the sub manufaturers requirements.
Slapping any old sub, box and port size together is going to sound like crap in the worst case, and will never reach it's full potential in the best case..........
You can't just throw any old sub into any old box and expect it to sound as good as it could. Even cheap crappy drivers can sound good if installed well. Top notch equipment will sound like crap if installed poorly.
The old saying holds true here:
"The best you know is the best you've heard"

Try to find specs and get the ports you need. But the required amp. You need to visit a audio store.
That box is a standard band pass box, 1/2 sealed 1/2 ported, they are made to hit hard in a very narrow range.
I had one, and I liked it, the only reason I got rid of it was because I blew a sub and I went for the full Memphis install, Memphis only does sealed or ported boxes.
I like the band pass boxes, they have a flashy look to them

Sounds like the 'Dude' who you bought them thru, won't give you store credit and 'what to do now?' .. you got this speaker box.
As Ozzy says, that's a used band pass box, I say thats been modified. GW also is correct.. Question is, do you want to pull one speaker out, supply the model # and let's go from there.
You might be able to buy a pre-made box that fits your speakers and might fit your car.
Are the subs blown, rattle??

07-21-2008, 11:12 PM
Christ, it's even more tragically undersized if it's a bandpass box................bandpass's are even bigger than ported if built correctly.
Just take your two JBL's and have a decent sealed enclosure built for them.
FYI, just one 12" JBL is going to pound harder than you can imagine if the box is built correctly.
Besides, an amp should be oversized compared to the sub's RMS rating. With 2 twelves, you need a serious amp, and I mean SERIOUS. Even with cheap ass xplod 12-inchers your looking at 300-350 watts RMS each. You'll need an amp capable of 600-ish wats RMS to just drive those, let alone what you'll need for decent set of JBL's.
That just doesn't sound as if it's in your budget judging by the components and..........ahem............"retailers"...............you're looking at.
If an amp is seriously undersized, you can get clipping of the signal, which spells certain smokey death for the drivers............
For the people out there that think band pass does not look cool, here is a setup with center firing subs in a plexi box using mirrors, cool setup
go to the 53 sec mark and it shows the trunk

Been there, done that (ported and bandpass), not impressed.
And yes, I know what I'm doing when I build them.
Sealed enclosures from now on for me.

I'm not sure if you are talking specifically about those subs and that particular box, so mistake me if I critique you the wrong way. I'm running two 12W3v2s off 250 watts rms and can very effectively render my rearview mirror useless at a little more than half volume with sub-levels flat, and don't have any issues with clipping at higher levels either.

I do not believe those are JL audio subs either. They don't look like the backside of any JL sub i've ever seen
Personally, Sealed is prefered. If you want to put down a loud note for SPL comps then a tuned port is best. Bandpass seem happy in suv's and such but I don't like em.
I've got a set of oldschool 12w6's sittin waiting for me to build something for em. I'm tryin to decide if I want to go SPL or SQ though.

Ewww..
1.) Build a custom box using 3/4" Mdf
2.) Buy a "good" amp ( thats not walmart brand)
3.) Have a professional install it.
4.) Enjoy.

I agree Shawn
Not sure of the exact model of JL subs but think they are the same, but I have 2 12" JL with a JL 250 rms Mono amp. I know the input to the subs is NOT in the sweet spot on the curve but acceptable for use per JL info in sealed boxes. They may not hit as hard but the SQ is excellent! I too can shake the mirror to a blur without clipping or damage. Been in 1 1/2 year now.
