My name is Kyle and I live in Illinois near St. Louis, Missouri. I work for Uncle Sam and have an obsession with anything that has wheels and a combustion engine. Actually...I guess it doesn't even have to have wheels since I work on bulldozers and other heavy machinery on the side.

Anyway...on to the good stuff! I have a 1999 and 2000 Intrepid. Both are Deep Slate in color, however, this sig page will be for the 2000.

I bought this car for $500 with a knocking 2.7L under the hood. I had already decided on this type of project, so I had a 3.2L with around 50K on it from a Concorde already sitting in the garage. A little elbow grease (and a lot of greasy shoes, articles of clothing, fingers, hands, face, hair...you get the idea) and I was blessed with a great car! Some polish, a few different machines, and several trips to the junkyard later and what you see below is the result.

This little lady was chillin' on the windshield while I was snapping pictures today. I decided she would get her own little spot in honor of being living creature number 4 to actually ride in/on the 3.2L converted Intrepid.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/W3ap0n-X/100_1399.jpg

I never actually made a signature page on the old forums. For some reason I just never felt interest in doing so. With the christening of the new site, however, I felt the need to do so. Dru and I actually got our cars together this afternoon and snapped some pictures of the 'treps in all their glory.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/W3ap0n-X/100_1382.jpg

Please forgive the fact that they're dirty. No time to clean them up any better and it's starting to get balls ass cold outside (as far as washing a car is concerned).

So...that's pretty much it for the 2000 Intrepid. My additions/mods so far are:

Front Police swaybar.
Rear Police swaybar.
3.2L conversion.
Column shifter to floor shifter conversion.
300M center console with 2nd lighter outlet and leather lid.
Chrome/Leather shift knob.
Lighted keyring
OTIS
Lighted visors
Autodim rearview mirror
300M heated power leather seats
Debadged front doors (the chrome was peeling off the lettering)
ATC
Autostick
Automatic Headlights
Painted 300M rims

Future mods/additions:
RB1
amplified speakers and sub
Police alternator
drilled/slotted rotors
Goodyear Assurance tires
Vinyl door panels
4/6 disk changer
EVIC
ES front fascia with fogs
Window tint

I'm not going to make a separate sig page for them, but below are my two ladies. One is gorgeous (1999 Camaro Z28 Convertible) and is leaving for college tomorrow (um...Secured Storage University) and the other is the ugly duckling (1967 Camaro)...but I think she'll grow out of that.

Looks like you prefer the hard mods Kyle! Real nice job making the car your own. Looks great, and I'm sure it's satisfying.

Thanks for the compliments, guys! I guess I did go for the really PITA mods...but it's better to get those done and out of the way.

I guess I should also mention that I actually bought and built this car for my fiancee. She's actually already taken a strong liking to it. She refuses to let it sit outside of the garage...even booted my convertible out in favor of it! That's why the Z has to go bye-bye to hide from the weather for awhile. I want the 67 to stay where I can get to her whenever I want. There are some trouble areas that I want to tend to before too much time goes by. Rust never sleeps, after all.

I should also mention the members who saved my arse several times on these projects. Special thanks to (in no particular order):

Torontofirecaptain
32Intrepid (can't remember his new name on here off the top of my head)
Ronbo
Dru (formerly Intrepidman21)

Also, many thanks to the misc. people that posted different pictures and diagrams that I pilfered and dissected.

Nice stable, Kyle.... and nicely done mods.... (Love the black almost as much as the silver, the black is just a bit harder to look nice and shiney... as I find out all the time with my/my son's black 02 SE)....

Great car man!
This is what this place is all about, a car that was dead and now has new life through someone who was willing to do an engine swap and some really nice upgrades!

I'd really love to have the time and mechanical know-how to do a swap like this. There are always mint SEs on craigslist in my area for very cheap prices. Unfortunately, I have neither. :(

how expensive was that 3.2L swap?

Dru
11-22-2007, 09:35 PM
I can answer that, he prolly spent about 2,000 total, oh and he did it himself. He went to hell and back to get that damn thing working. I told him he'd better never get rid of that car or I'd buy it off him lol.

Actually, I spent about $1,500 or so for the swap. So far the complete dollar amount I have in the car (this includes the 1999 Intrepid) is around $3,000 or so. I'm actually estimating a little high I think.

If I get what I want out of the 99 it will bring my total project amount down to around $2,500. Not bad for basically an ES 2000 Intrepid with around 50K on the motor!

Finally FINALLY licensed, titled, insured, and DROVE the 'trep (legally) today! Man, oh, man. Got her a full tank and gave her a test run. I really do see why you guys love these cars. For a family hauler I had a blast!

For anyone who has been considering it...DO THE SWAYBAR MOD! An exit ramp that always bothered me (even in the Z28) at higher speeds was a joke to the Intrepid at around 65mph. I can merge again! (yeah, yeah, 65mph, but again it's a FAMILY SEDAN!) The same ramp is a little iffy in the Z at around 85 or so.

The fiancee insisted on driving home from the DMV and as she was putting along she turned on the radio, played with the cruise control, checked out the mirrors and the OTIS, then turned to me and said, "Okay...I really like it."

Just thought I'd share. Now all I have to do is find myself one to do all the same stuff to in the future. Only problem is...has to be a different color. Two Deep Slate Intrepids would just get confusing.

It's possible that the amount of fun I had in the car was directly proportionate to the amount of work I put into her. I will add that I turned fairly fast into my road with Dru in the car (while the car was still not legal) and he actually looked over and said, "Wow!".

Basically...do the swaybars mod, ladies and gentlemen. Best $150 I ever spent.

You had me until you said "alero". This is one of the worst cars I have ever driven IMHO.
actually, as big a trep fan as I am, I like the '67 the best (this is my dream car, so I am biased).
The car(s) look fantastic, you see the amount of work that went into them.
How did you do the front sway bar mod by the way?

Oh, if only it were as easy as the Intrepid. That car is a work beater, plain and simple. Haha. I change the oil with the best synthetic I can, I keep the tranny happy and all other fluids checked, and I put brakes on her when she needs them. I'll put good tires on her and get an alignment...but that's it. It's got manual windows for goodness sake!

The Alero isn't all bad. It gets me to and from work and has a decent radio in it. Lol. For a four banger, however, the mileage sucks. That's why I hope to get myself another Intrepid.

The '67 is my dream car as well. When I was 4 years old I found a Matchbox car in the dirt at my grandparents' house. It was a Marina Blue Metallic 1967 Camaro SS with white and black deluxe interior. That was what got me into cars...and I've been into them ever since.

Thank you for the compliment. The way I figure it...if I do the work myself then not only do I save money but I respect the car a lot more.

I cheated on the swaybar mod. Since I was doing the 3.2L conversion anyway, I looked down at the swaybar in the empty engine bay and a little light came on above my head. A can of self-etching primer and a can of black glossy spraypaint and a trip to the dealership and I had copcar swaybars!

You cheated!!!! The motor was out when the front sway bar went in....

:smash: :smash: :smash:

Nice work! With a new cluster, 4 wiring harness and a leather shifter boot cover, the car could have Autostick.... OOOPPSSS it's your girl's car..

Late!

Damn I wish I had thought of the sway bar during my swap.

It was two different colors. Had a black stripe in it. This was an OLD Matchbox. You know, one of the ones that were made with high quality materials and still looked like real cars. I stopped messing with Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars when I saw they had a giant roller skate or shoe on wheels hanging on the shelf next to a dinosaur shaped Hot Wheel.

It was hard to not think of it with it being completely in my way trying to get the damn flywheel cover off and while fighting the torque converter bolts! :cuss:

Edit: I actually found a picture of that old Matchbox, but it was tiny. The main thing about that car was the color and those hood louvers. I was going to try to make my 67 look exactly like that one, but the car was originally butternut yellow...and I'm afraid it may have to be again. *sigh* Why couldn't it have been blue?

Slight update. Getting P0300 (random misfire) so I think it may be time for a tune-up or the car may just be REALLY confused with the 3.2L. Going to give her some time.

Got yelled at by the fiancee for taking an exit ramp at high speed. She yelled and said I was going to destroy the tires. Hmm...I think she's right. Goodyear Assurance Tripletreads (I think that's what they're called) going on the alloys I'm getting soon. Wonder if that would be a good Christmas present for her...? (kidding).

My average fuel economy (mostly highway) has leveled off at 28.7 and climbs to 29 on the highway to work. I should have built one of these a LONG time ago. How can you beat getting that mileage in a car this size, of this comfort level, and with that much power? The damn Alero gets roughly the same mileage or worse!

I will say that I don't take off like a bat out of hell from a stop, but I do cruise at 65mph-70mph. Just imagine if I backed off my cruising speed a little!

Hmm...I'm saying "MY" a lot when I should be saying "Her". In the future there WILL be a second LH series signature page for W3ap0n-X. I've gotta get me one of these!

Yeah, that's a pretty damned important mod Kyle! The fuel pump is kind too....lol, just messin. I do prefer the fixed cup holders in mine too.

Well...the fuel pump is a huge victory. I think I finally figured out the misfire. 20psi of fuel pressure will do that. Doesn't hurt to bump every now and again!

Damn it...still misfiring, just not as often. I may do the crash into a tree mod. Turn my Intrepid into a 300M or something.

Edit #2: Lucky enough guy to get two bad crankshaft position sensors in a row. All is well now...except the Mexican hose from Advance Auto is leaking! Go with the good money hoses from the dealership or O'Reilley's.

Just a quick update.

ATC mod completed.
Autostick added (wiring inside car)
Leather Steering wheel.
Painted 300M rims (actually look pretty sweet with this color)
Automatic headlights (came with the ATC basically...but still count)

Also, the really important thing to remember about this car is that it's a daily driver/work beater. I just REALLY like to have all the amenities and have her clean as a whistle. Dings and rock chips are a fact of life...but she's comfy as hell and not too bad at sipping the gas. I like her.
