I just bought a '99 LHS that has been rolled and want to replace the drivetrain or just the engine in my '95 LHS that has bearing noise. I will have a lot of '99 parts to sell when this is over, they managed to roll it without setting off the airbags.
Has anybody done a similar swap? I tried to use "search" but got no useable results. Right away I know OBDII to OBDI so there will have to be several sensors changed from the old engine to the new one. I also noticed the first time I looked under the hood of the '99 that there is a change from two T/Bs to one T/B and the individual coils on the plugs.
I am planning on changing the timing belt and water pump while the engine is out as a start.
I am not sure on the maintenance on the '99 as I can see a rear rotor with pretty good grooves in it and it has three different sizes of 17 in. rubber on it. Possibly A/M wheels, they have a "JIL" or something cast into the rim between the spokes.

if you do it, your gonna be in for a lot of work,, really not worth it,, a lot of mods have to be done, to even make the 99 engine fit in the first gen,, , then theres swapping all the wiring over,,,,, etc,,

Wouldn't bee too bad if you have a welder. From what I have heard the oil pan on a 2nd gen won't fit because of the swaybar and how the cradle is laid out. You would have to modify the cradle and build a custom oil pan.

Transferring the wiring would be easier then rest of the project.

I think you'd be better off buying a 2nd gen (1998-2004) with a blown 2.7L cheap and putting that 3.5L in it. But that's just my opinion.

I have to agree with ron its way easier and cheeper to swap a second gen engine into a second gen rather than first gen, Just my opinion. Although it would be cool to see a second gen engine in a first gen, I just don't see wasting the time to modify it in such a way to cram it in there.

Yeah, it will be ALOT of work to get the 2g 3.5 to swap over. Few years back on DI.net there was a member called Hypnos who got farther with that project than anyone else. Unfortunately he stopped posting and never updated if the swap was completed. But he did run into a lot of obstacles on the way. I'm not tryin to rain on your parade but as others have said above me it would be more feasible to buy a 2g with a blown 2.7L and swap over the 3.5L.

If the car was a rollover, wouldnt the engine be kaput?

not really, if the engine was running for a few minutes when the car was on it's back the yea the engine would be totaled.

But it was such a deal, only $230 and a trip to Ft. Worth with my V-10 and trailer. Now y'all are telling me it won't work. Would it be any easier to change the entire subframe?
I guess the plan is back to pull the pan off the 95 and see how bad the crank is in the original engine.
I know where there is a 3.8L I have been thinking about if the 3.3L in the Caravan AWD gives up.
I also have a 94 or 95 trep w/3.5L with oil that looks like chocolate milk and one of Chrysler's famous white paint jobs.

I'd still say a 1998-2001 LH car for the swap. 2001+ and there's a few parts to change to get it running.

No one as far as I know has stuffed a 3.5L from a 2nd gen car into a 1st gen car of any year and had it up and running...much less as a daily driver. Like I said my opinion was to get a 2nd gen car with a crap motor and you're good to go.

Even for $230...have you seen/heard that 3.5 run? It's a lot of work to swap engines and if you don't know whether you're working with a known good engine then it's not such a good deal.

There are plenty of 2nd gen cars out there with blown 2.7 engines...take a look around.

If the clock bezel has wings, could you grab it for me. 7urple can have the clock, I'm just interested in the bezel. ;)

If the airbags went off, that would trigger the ASD (auto shutdown) relay which kills the power to the PCM, thus stopping the engine.

In the owners manual it says that it the car will run and drive after the air bags were deployed. It also says that they dont recommend it because air bags deploy only once lol

If the auto shutdown relay trips you just need to switch the car off to reset it then the car will restart normally ...so I've heard.

good point. there are quite a few on ebay right now and a coupe near cincy. if your close there is a 2000 intrepid es. its got a bad 3.2 you could swap it. he only wants 1k for it. here is the link:

I think you are right. Probably something simple. On a side note, that Trep has been in a frontal collision
